Catalyzing innovation and scale in sustainable proteins.
Pooled philanthropic capital to advance the science, policy, and markets for plant-based, fermented, and cultivated meat and dairy.
The Impact Opportunity
-

Climate
Food systems account for roughly one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. Animal agriculture is a major contributor. Sustainable proteins offer a pathway to significantly reduce the climate footprint of protein production.
-

Biodiversity
Animal agriculture is a major driver of habitat conversion and biodiversity loss. Shifting protein production can reduce pressure on ecosystems and help protect the species and habitats they support.
-

Water
Animal agriculture places significant pressure on freshwater resources and contributes to nutrient and other forms of water pollution. Sustainable proteins can reduce both the water use and pollution associated with protein production.
-

Health & Nutrition
Today’s protein system contributes to interconnected challenges in nutrition, food security and public health. Sustainable proteins can help build a more resilient food system by expanding access to nutritious, affordable and culturally relevant choices while reducing risks associated with intensive animal production.
-

Animal Welfare
Tens of billions of land animals—and far more aquatic animals—are raised and killed for food each year. Sustainable proteins can meet growing protein demand while reducing reliance on animals for food.
-

Land Use & Restoration
Animal agriculture uses most of the world’s agricultural land, much of it for grazing and feed production. More land-efficient proteins can reduce this demand and create opportunities for conservation and ecological restoration.
How We Work
Some of the most important barriers to sustainable protein growth cannot be solved by companies or markets alone.
The Future Protein Fund is designed to pool philanthropic capital to address these shared barriers by investing in the science, policy, market coordination, financing mechanisms, institutions, and enabling conditions the field needs to advance.
Our approach is landscape-driven: we identify critical gaps, determine where philanthropy can be most catalytic, and direct funding toward opportunities that can unlock progress across the broader ecosystem.
